These ascogeneous hyphae typically consist of cells with two genetically different [[nuclei]] ([[heterokaryosis]]), or, more rarely, consist of cells with genetically identical nuclei ([[homokaryosis]]). Ascogeneous hyphae are restricted to as narrow layer within the [[ascocarp]], whereas the majority of a [[thallus]] or mycelium consists of [[somatic]], [[uninucleate]], [[haploid]] hyphae. The [[fusion]] of the two nuclei of the dikaryon is called [[nucleogamy]], generally rapidly followed by the formation of [[meiospore]]s within a sac-like structure, the [[ascus]].
