The term is not consistently applied by various authors and often used quite differently. Therefore this term might best be avoided entirely. Obscurely lobed thalli, i.&nbsp;e., thalli that lack distinct [[lobe]]s, are better referred to as [[sublobate]]. In contrast, distinctly lobed thalli are [[lobate]]. Lobate thalli may have an ''irregular'' outline or they are [[placodioid]], i.&nbsp;e., having distinctly elongated and radiating lobes; the [[thallus]] is then almost circular in outline.
