phycobiont (noun, pl. phycobionts) – algae being the photobiont partner in a lichen symbiosis. The term is problematic because algae are an ecological rather than a taxonomic group of organisms. From an ecological point of view, cyanobacteria also represent algae even though they are prokaryotic and only distantly related to eukaryotic algae.
