pruina (noun,no singular) – a powdery, "frosted" or "chalky", often crystalline deposit or "bloom"; usually white, grey, or bluish, rarely yellowish or otherwise pigmented; most often a crystalline deposit like calcium oxalate (re-crystallizing into colourless needles with HCl, insoluble in KOH), or a crystalline deposit of secondary lichen metabolites (insoluble in acid, often soluble in KOH); occasionally also caused by an epinecral layer and therefore not crystalline, but consisting of dead or dying cells or their remains.
