nitrophobous (adjective) – not tolerating high levels of nitrogen; often generally used for organisms that cannot tolerate high amounts of nutrients or will be excluded from nutrient rich habitats because other organisms are more competitive and thus more successful in these environments. In the strict sense the suffix "–phobous" implies an intolerance for a particular condition. This may be the case as far as particular, often toxic substances are concerned. However, if competition is excluded, no organisms will be intolerant of high nutrient levels. The term "nitrophobous" is therefore a misnomer.
