exsiccata (noun, pl. exsiccatae; fromLatin exsiccatus for dried) – a set of dried herbarium specimens; usually referring to a set of identified specimens all belonging to the same taxon and distributed among various herbaria; e. g., Lichenes selecti exsiccati (= Selected dried specimens of lichens). Exsiccatae are still a common way for lichen taxonomist to convey and distribute their species concepts.
Language notes:
exsiccata (noun, pl. exsiccatae; feminine) = a set of dried specimens usually provided with printed labels.
exsiccatum (noun, singular; neuter) = dried specimen
exsiccatus (participle) = dried
If exsiccatus is used as part of the title of an exsiccata, it will follow the sex of the noun, so: The title of a set of dried fungi or lichens that are distributed as an exsiccata would be: fungi exsiccati (or in the case of lichenized fungi: lichenes exsiccati). The title of a set of dried plants (including bryophytes) that are distributed as an exsiccata would be: plantae exsiccatae (or in the case of bryophytes: bryophytae exsiccatae).
