Linnaean systems) – the ''Linnaean System'' is a system of biological nomenclature that follows several general principles: (1) all codes of botanical, zoological, bacterial and virological nomenclature are [[independent]]; (2) names of taxa are based upon [[type]]s; (2) the validity of names is determined by [[priority]]; (3) only one single name can be the [[valid]] name of a taxon; (4) scientific names are treated as Latin regardless of their origin. All codes currently use a [[binominal]] form and follow a strictly hierarchical ranking system. The only system of biological nomenclature proposed as an alternative to the ranking hierarchy of the ''Linnaean System'' is the [[Phylocode]]. The Phylocode currently does not provide principles for naming species and has so far only been proposed as a draft.
