orchil (adjective, colour term; variant spelling: orchill; also asnoun: sl. orchil, pl. orchils; synonym: litmus, no plural) – referring to colour: reddish violet to deep purple or blue depending on the pH (a low, acid pH results in a reddish colour; a high, basic pH gives a blue colour); referring to the pigment: an organic dye derived from a variety of lichens like most Roccella species, some Lecanora and Ochrolechia species, and several other genera; referred to as litmus if used as pH indicator.
