austral zone (noun,biogeography term,no plural) – a floristic zone south of the southern subtropics (austrosubtropics), including the South African Floristic Province, Southern Australia and Southern New Zealand, Argentina and Chile, and the Southern Pacific and Southern Atlantic Islands; climatically and floristically a rather diverse region including areas with Mediterranean climate such as Southern Australia, South Africa and large parts of Chile, but also dry grassland areas (Argentine) and highly oceanic islands.
