south (noun,no plural;biogeography term; abbreviation: S) – a cardinal direction; located on the mariner's compass at 180°, clockwise from due north and directly opposite north; at exactly 90° southern latitude following any meridian from the equator towards the south pole; an area or region lying in the south.
