Jack in the box

Jack-In-The-Box (no plural) – an explosive discharge of spores by which the flexible endoascus becomes separated from the exoascus. The term "jack-in-the-box" is derived from a children's "surprise" toy: a small box containing a spring-loaded clown named Jack, who shoots out, when the box is opened.
