gelatinous sheath (pl. gelatinous sheaths; synonym: sl. mucilaginous sheath, pl. mucilaginous sheath; sl. ectosporium, pl. ectosporia) – the outermost layer of the ascospore; sometimes interpreted as an outer, gelatinous part of the perispore, sometimes interpreted as a separate layer, i. e., an epispore; most often thin and barely distinguished in the light microscope, but in some taxa considerably swollen and thus forming a halo.
