Melanized
melanized (adjective, colour term) – containing dark brown pigments. Brown melanin-like colours can generally be ascribed to a group of acetone insoluble pigments that stain hyphal cell walls or are present between cells as diffuse, soluble substance. Although these pigments typically have a similar colour as melanin, they are structurally and chemically not identical with this protein that occurs in human or animal hair. Instead, the structure or chemical nature of these pigments is largely unknown because they cannot be analyzed with standard techniques like TLC or HPLC. Simple spot test reagents like KOH, HCl or NHO3, if applied repetitively in sequence, may be used to distinguish distinct colour reactions. According to these reactions a standardized nomenclature has been proposed for all acetone insoluble pigments, including reddish, bluish and greenish pigments.
