Phenocortex

phenocortex (pl. phenocortices; alternative spelling: pl. phenocortexes) – pseudocortex sensu Poelt (1958), i. e., a cortex-like structure containing dead algal cells (which stain purplish in chlor-zinc iodine) that slough off from the algal layer.
