Photobiont layer

photobiont layer (pl. photobiont layers) – a distinct, horizontal aggregation of photobiont cells (algae or cyanobacteria) lying just below the upper cortex or close to the surface of lichens that have no cortex; generally developed between thin-walled and loosely interwoven hyphae (compare with algal layer).
