Prothallus

prothallus (pl. prothalli) – a primal thallus persistent as black rim or outline along the periphery of crustose thalli; composed of radiating, branched hyphae or hyphal bundles; forming a white, reddish or blue-black weft devoid of photobiont cells, sometimes projecting far beyond the thallus across the substrate; if extending between the areoles or thallus lobes better referred to as hypothallus .
