tomentum (singular only) – a dense, felt-like, downy, lint-like, cobwebby or woolly mat on the upper or lower surface of the thallus (in contrast: a pubescent surface is covered with much finer and extremely short hairs; a villous surface is covered with long, more slender hairs; both are usually not referred to as a tomentum).
