biological classification (pl. biological classifications) – any system of grouping organisms according to their similarities and presumed evolutionary history (phylogeny); two general trends can be distinguished: (1) the current codes of nomenclature all follow the tradition of the Linnean System, that is blamed for a (presumably) rigid and hierarchic structure and instability of names; (2) alternatively a phylogenetic nomenclature, the Phylocode, has been suggested, but so far not been implemented, thus lacking proof that this system of classification is more adaptable and more stable.
