Nomenclature
nomenclature (noun, pl. nomenclatures) – a set of formal rules generally accepted by scientists to govern the naming of species and groups of species. Traditionally species have been named by botanist, zoologists and bacteriologists. Therefore, four independent taxonomic codes are currently valid: The International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN), The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), The International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria (BC), and The International Code of Virus Classification and Nomenclature (ICVCN). A draft of a universal code for all organisms, the Draft Bio code, has also been proposed but is currently not valid. More recently a separate, integrative system has been proposed as The Phylocode. Although initially proposed as an alternative, the Phylocode no longer claims to supersede traditional systems, but emphasizes that it should be used for naming phylogenetic relationships. Currently no provisions in the Phylocode exist to name species and although a draft is available for some time, no final decision to implement that set of rules has been reached.
