hypo– (Greek,prefix) – below, beneath, under, underneath; e. g., hypothecium (the layer of hyphae below the thecium, i. e., below both the hymenium and the subhymenium), Hypogymnia (a foliose lichen genus without rhizines and therefore "naked on the lower side"), hypothallus (non-lichenized hyphae forming a weft upon which the main thallus establishes), etc.
