Mat

mat (noun, pl. mats) – a flat, densely woven piece of cloth; in biology sometimes used to refer to organisms that form mat-like biological structures, e. g., a mat of bacteria, a mycelial mat of fungal hyphae; not to be confused with the adjective matt, meaning non-reflective.
