ascus (noun, ascus term, pl. asci) – a sac-like or pouch-like structure containing one or several (most often 8) ascospores as a result of sexual reproduction (plasmogamykaryogamymeiosis, often followed by one or several mitosesfree-cell formation); the processes of ascospore formation take place inside a pre-ascus, i. e., a considerably inflated cell forming at the tip of ascogeneous, i. e., dikaryotic hyphae; the ascus is thus in effect a meiosporangium formed by the dikaryotic generation of ascomycetes, i. e., the sporomycelium.
