gametangium (noun, pl. gametangia) – a cell containing or producing gametes or gametic nuclei. In ascomycetes the female gametangium (see archaegonium, ascogonium) does no longer produce separate gametes but instead is one single cell containing one ore several gametic nuclei. The male gametangium (see antheridium, spermogonium, spermatiophore) of ascomycetes either produces gametes (sperm cells) or it is also reduced to a single cell with one or several gametic nuclei.
