metamorphic (adjective; variant spelling: metamorphous) – (1) geological: formed through structural transformation of rock under extreme pressure; (2) biological: drastically changing in structure following different life stages from the juvenile to the adult form; referring for example to the transformation of a maggot into an adult fly, a caterpillar into a butterfly, or a tadpole into a frog.
