compact (adjective; synonym: dense) – closely and firmly packed together, occupying little space, dense but not necessarily solid; e. g., (1) frequently used to describe closely interwoven hyphae, e. g., a thallus medulla that has little or now open spaces like the dense central cord in the lichen genus Usnea; (2) thallus branches that are crowded and densely packed (as opposed to loose or diffuse).
