endolithic (adjective) – growing within rock, i. e., penetrating between mineral crystals and sometimes even capable of dissolving minerals; generally with little or no thallus visible on the rock surface, but usually at least the reproductive structures (ostioles of pycnidia or perithecia, the disk of the apothecia, etc.) reaching the surface (also see chasmolithic, cryptolithic).
