necral (adjective) – a layer of dead cellular remains, giving the thallus a white, granular appearance; a thin to thick, horny, transparent layer of dead or dying fungal hyphae, with indistinct cell lumina, overlying the cortex or pseudocortex; usually on the upper surface (above the algal layer) and called epinecral layer (if below the algal layer, called hyponecral layer); or a glossy or waxy appearance, and when thick frequently becomes shallowly cracked (rimose) in a characteristic way ("q. v." epinecral).
