erose (adjective) – lacking a distinct outline or surface, as if eroded. The term erose has been used inconsistently referring to ecorticate or decorticate thalli or structures that look as if eroded: (1) thallus surface: eroded, decorticate; (2) thallus growth form: leprose, but not continuous, i. e., broken into separate flakes or aggregates of soredia, cf. diffuse; (3) thallus edge, perimeter, lobe margin: delicate and not distinctly delimited, with irregular, tooth-like projections from the edge (appearing as if bitten or gnawed).
