homoimerous (adjective) – lacking unequal or differing parts, not layered; in lichens: referring to a thallus without a distinct photobiont layer, i. e., a thallus where photobiont (usually a cyanobacterium, e. g., Nostoc) and mycobiont are uniformly dispersed or intertwined. Note: a lichen thallus is still homoimerous even if the hyphae generally appear more loosely interwoven than the densely packed photobiont cells; the emphasis of the definition is the degree of differentiation of the thallus into distinct layers; therefore a thallus that is not layered but may have a thin layer of cortical cells is still homoimerous. The term is also applied in a more general sense in biology to describe structures that are not or little differentiated, e. g., in basidiomycetous fungi homoimerous refers to trama (parts of lamellae of a basidiocarp) of Russulaceae that are characterized uniformly filamentous hyphae.
