Algal sheath

algal sheath (pl. algal sheaths, synonym: sl. photobiont sheath, pl. photobiont sheaths) – the mucilaginous layer of polysaccharides that frequently surrounds single, aggregates, or colonies of photobionts; sometimes erroneously applied to the remains of dead algal cells, e. g., within a phenocortex.
