Algal sheath

algal sheath (noun, pl. algal sheaths; synonym: photobiont sheath) – the mucilaginous layer of polysaccharides that frequently surrounds single, aggregates, or colonies of photobionts; sometimes erroneously applied to the remains of dead algal cells, e. g., within a phenocortex.
