phenocortex (noun, pl. phenocortices; variant spelling: pl. phenocortexes) – pseudocortex sensu Poelt (1958), i. e., a cortex-like structure containing dead algal cells (which stain purplish in chlor-zinc iodine) that slough off from the algal layer. Related terms: cortex, eucortex, pseudocortex, cone cortex, epicortex, syncortex, ecorticate. This is:part of thallus surface,part of thallus interior. Kind of: cortex.
