Tubercle

tubercle (pl. tubercles; alternative spellings: sl. tubercule, pl. tubercules; sl. tubercue, pl. tubercuae, or sl. tubercula, pl. tuberculae; synonym: sl. wart, pl. warts) – generally a minute, wart-like or knoblike, thalline protuberance; in Usnea more strictly applied only to superficial structures which are coarser than papillae (but irregular in form and size) and which generally have a broken cortex at the tip.
