Tubercle

tubercle (noun, pl. tubercles; variant spellings: sl. tubercule, pl. tubercules; sl. tubercue, pl. tubercuae, or sl. tubercula, pl. tuberculae; synonym: wart) – generally a minute, wart-like or knob-like, thalline protuberance; in Usnea more strictly applied only to superficial structures which are coarser than papillae (but irregular in form and size) and which generally have a broken cortex at the tip. Related terms: lamella. This is:part of thallus surface.
