Jump to: navigation, search

alga (noun, pl. algae) – predominantly aquatic, but also terrestrial, photosynthetic organisms, ranging in size from single cells like diatoms or (even bacteria) to huge multicellular organisms like the giant kelp. The term algae is essentially an ecological and not a taxonomic category; in a strict sense often applied only to eukaryotic organisms, but in a more loosely applied sense also referring to blue-green algae that are prokaryotic, i. e., bacteria.
