cf. (Latin,abbreviation; synonym: cfr.) – confer, literally meaning "compare", used to express uncertainty about an identification; e. g., "Buellia cf. stellulata (Taylor) Mudd" means that the specimen is similar to that species, but not necessarily identical; "cf. Buellia stellulata (Taylor) Mudd" means that even the genus identification is uncertain.
