Chipped
From LIAS Glossary
chipped (adjective) – an areolate or rimose areolate thallus that has partly eroded away, thus characterized by open patches. It is a common phenomenon that central regions of old crustose thalli die and subsequently flake-off, thus appearing as if these areoles have been chipped away.
