chondroid (adjective) – like cartilage; with a tough but elastic consistency and more or less translucent, often with a shiny surface. Frequently used to describe hyphae embedded in a thick, mucilaginous extracellular matrix. The cell wall typically merges with this surrounding matrix and is thus difficult to distinguish. The cell lumina of chondroid hyphae are typically thin and can often barely be distinguished. Related terms: leptodermatous, mesodermatous, pachydermatous.
