epispore (noun, ascospore term, spore morphology term, pl. epispores; variant spelling: sl. episporium, pl. episporia) – this term is confusing and should better be avoided because it has been applied by some authors to refer to the main wall layer that determines the shape of the spore, i. e., the proper spore wall, whereas others have used it to refer to one of the outer layers, the perispore, a layer that is often responsible for spore ornamentation and located just inside a gelatinous sheath. This is:part of spore.
