Facultative
From LIAS Glossary
facultative (adjective; opposite: obligate) – optional; not necessarily; not obligate ("q. v."). For example, in nature almost all photobionts, even Trebouxia species occur independently of a lichen symbiosis. Thus photobionts are mostly facultatively lichenized.
