Gamut
gamut (noun,no plural; synonyms: colour range; colour space) – the range of colours that can be achieved by a particular colour reproduction device like a monitor, screen or printer. The gamut of colours that can be reproduced by a particular device is limited by physical constraints of the device being used (e. g., some colours that can be displayed on a cathode ray tube (CRT) may be out of gamut on an liquid crystal display (LCD)). Another limitation is the human perception system, namely the colour receptors in the human eye and the way the human brain processes their signals. Thus, not all colours that an 48 bit computer monitor is theoretically able to reproduce billions of colour, but the average human eye is rarely able to discriminate up to 700 millions of colour. Nevertheless, large colour spaces are technically advantageous because a typical colour reproduction environment has to translate the gamut from one device to another one without causing visible artefacts.
