Photophilous

From LIAS Glossary
Jump to: navigation, search

photophilous (adjective) – loving light; preferring a well-illuminated environment; often especially applied to photosynthetic organisms that live in fully exposed, strongly illuminated habitats. However, excessive light, and especially UV-radiation, typically damages the photosynthetic apparatus. It would in most cases therefore be more appropriate, not to emphasize light preference but light tolerance. Thus thesuffix "–phytic" will in most cases be more appropriate. Related terms: photophytic.
