polyphyletic (adjective) – referring to an artificial group of taxa that does not share a common ancestor and cannot be characterized by sharing the same set of derived characters; current taxonomies still include many of these completely artificial groups and phylogenetic studies generally try to eliminate these groups; nomenclature must be updated to avoid naming of polyphyletic groups. Related terms: paraphyletic, monophyletic.
