Pseudocyphellium
pseudocyphellium (noun, pl. pseudocyphellae) – a small orbicular to linear or irregular patch on the thallus surface (both on the lower and upper side) where the cortex is missing and medullary hyphae protrude, thus forming a simple pore facilitating gas exchange, generally lacking a clearly defined lining or rim and therefore not identical with true cyphellae; often developing into soralia when soredia erupt from below; usually plane to slightly convex and not recessed, rarely widening and becoming fissural; usually white, but sometimes pigmented, frequent among many different lichen genera.
