species aggregate (noun, pl. species aggregates;nomenclature term; synonym: species complex) – a species group, i. e., closely related species that are often difficult to distinguish; often also indicated by adding the following abbreviation at the end of a name: agg. for aggregate. Similar but not identical is the concept of a single taxon, e. g., a species, genus or family, that displays a large variation but cannot strictly be subdivided; cf. s. l. for sensu lato or s. ampl. for sensu amplissimo, meaning in a wider sense.
