State
state (noun, pl. states) – (1) in general: a condition that defines a particular attribute of a structure; (2) in biology: the condition that can be observed when a particular attribute of a biological structure is examined, more accurately referred to as character state; (3) political: a sovereign cultural body or territory that constitutes a nation or part of a nation, e. g., the state of France, the state of Arizona. Several states may form a country, e. g., the United States of America, the Federal Republic of Germany, or a political Union like the European Union, or a loose association like the British Commonwealth. States are typically further subdivided into administrative or cultural regions; e. g., counties, districts, cantons or provinces.
