sub– (Latin,prefix) – (1) below, beneath, under, underneath, part of. Examples: subalpine (transition zone between the upper montane and the alpine belt), subterminal (close but just below the tip), subhymenium (the layer of ascogeneous hyphae immediately below the hymenium), subregion (part of a region) or (2) less, nearly, almost; used to indicate a diminutive form; e. g., subsquamulose (almost squamulose, starting to form into squamules), suberect (almost erect, with a tendency to become erect), subglobose (not quite globose), submuriform (not quite muriform; used to describe spores which have several median septa but only one or few longitudinal septum) etc.
