variety (noun, pl. varieties;nomenclature term;Latin: sl. varietas, pl. varietates) – a taxonomic rank below the species, although no general agreement exists, how this rank is to be used, it has been suggested that it might be best suited to describe different types of morphological, anatomical or chemical variation within the same population; currently the rank "variety" rarely is rarely used in mycology or lichenology because it has been discredited by extensive use in the past, describing every little morphological variation as a distinct variety.
