Discomycete
discomycete (noun, colloquial, pl. discomycetes; common name: cup fungus) – a group of ascomycetes (= sac-fungi) that can be recognized by their disk-like ascocarp; formerly proposed as a class of the Ascomycota (having unitunicate (including operculate or inoperculate) asci borne in true apothecia, i. e., disciform ascocarps with ascohymenial ontogeny), but no longer recognized as a scientific taxon name. Still used in a descriptive, colloquial fashion to describe any ascomycete with disciform ascocarps.
