Axial mass

axial mass (noun,ascus term, pl. axial masses; synonym: apical body) – the cap-like, broadened tip of the tholus, above the axial canal, often distinctly reacting with Lugol's iodine (e. g., Lecidea-type ascus) and extending into the tholus flanks (e. g., Bacidia-type ascus). This is:part of ascus.
